FCIPMAPS.net Archive Secured

PRESERVING THE ORIGINAL COLLECTION

One of the first major milestones for FCIP Maps was securing the original community map collection.

The archive currently contains 3,492 original ZIP archives, representing 3,602 extracted map records. Some ZIP archives contain more than one map.

Our preservation process was designed to retain the original downloadable archives while extracting useful information for the future searchable map library.

EXTRACTING MAP INFORMATION

We developed a custom extraction process to examine the original map files and recover available information, including:

  • Map titles
  • Original creator names
  • Descriptions
  • Supported game modes
  • Map environments
  • Preview images
  • Other available technical metadata

The process produced 3,589 unique map thumbnails. Some map records share identical map data.

Not all historical metadata is complete or reliable, so certain fields may require additional verification.

SECURE LONG-TERM STORAGE

The original ZIP archives and extracted thumbnails have been transferred to Cloudflare R2 storage.

The project also has its own domain, FCIPMaps.net, and is being developed around Cloudflare infrastructure for long-term independence.

A Cloudflare D1 database and website integration are planned to organize the extracted catalogue and make it searchable.

WHAT COMES NEXT

The next major step is connecting the preserved collection to the website so visitors can browse maps, view previews, search by available metadata, and download original archives.

Securing the collection is an important first step toward making these maps accessible again.
