Understanding the FCIP Map File Format
EXPLORING THE ORIGINAL MAP FILES
Beyond preserving the map collection, FCIP Maps is interested in understanding how the original game stored its community-created maps.
The map files contain more than just playable level data.
Our initial extraction work has already demonstrated that useful information can be recovered from the original files, including map titles, creator names, descriptions, game-mode information, and preview images.
WHAT WE'VE LEARNED SO FAR
Our custom extraction tools have successfully processed 3,602 map records from the existing archive.
This work has allowed us to generate a searchable metadata catalogue and thousands of map preview thumbnails.
Some records contain unusual or incomplete metadata, which highlights the importance of further documentation and verification.
FUTURE RESEARCH
We hope to investigate additional aspects of the map file format, including:
- How map objects and environmental information are represented
- How terrain and object properties are stored
- How historical community map modifications worked
- Whether independent tools could eventually inspect or modify certain map properties
These are research goals, not confirmed capabilities or promised features.
DOCUMENTING COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE
Over the years, community members experimented with custom map-editing techniques and tools.
Much of that knowledge is now difficult to find.
Where possible, we hope to document historical discoveries and preserve information about the tools and techniques used by the original community.
Our priority remains preserving the maps themselves. Research will continue gradually as time and available information permit.
